Show your military colours
Have you ever wondered where the iconic duffle coat came from? It’s as popular today as it ever has been, but it didn’t start life on the catwalks or draped around the shoulders of celebs. In fact, its roots are quite the opposite—the duffle coat first came into being in 1890 having been invented by John Partridge, and it became popular with the British Royal Navy in World War I.
The duffle coat’s military history is well documented. The three-quarter length style and thick material made it the perfect choice during the cold winter months, with its hood and deep pockets only adding to its practical nature. It was warm, cosy and the toggles made it easy to fasten and unfasten, with the camel shade being the colour of choice for military personnel. It was worn by all ranks and was particularly coveted by Field Marshall Montgomery, which led to the coat being affectionately nicknamed the “Monty”.
The coat was modified slightly during World War II and started to become popular with the general public during the 1950s and 60s, thanks in no small part to huge stocks of military surplus coats being readily available at cheap prices, and it’s been growing in popularity ever since. The original “Monty” style coat was picked up by British manufacturer Gloverall and they continue to make the same style to this very day, with every modern configuration of the Montgomery duffle coat being based on their original design.
Of course, there are a wide range of other manufacturers who produce duffle coats of such calibre, and with plenty of variations in terms of style and colour you’ll be spoilt for choice. The traditional camel shade is as popular as ever but no matter which one you choose you can’t go wrong with this iconic, military-style coat, so get out there and show your military colours today.
